North Newton had never played for a state title in any sport. On June 13, 2025, at Purdue’s Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette, Sydney Rainford struck out 17 and drove in the go-ahead run in a 2-0 win over Clay City. The IHSAA recap calls it the school’s first championship.

The other three finals are on the IHSAA softball tournament page. Crown Point beat Center Grove 2-0 in nine innings. Tecumseh beat Andrean 2-0 and held Andrean to one hit. Indianapolis Cathedral beat Hanover Central 5-4. Three shutouts and a one-run game, all at the same stadium.

The participation number behind a diamond is national. The NFHS 2025-26 summary lists fastpitch softball at 331,162 participants in 15,712 schools, the fifth-largest girls sport in that survey. Indiana’s four finals are one weekend inside that count. An Indianapolis baseball Saturday is smaller than Bittinger Stadium. It still needs a diamond number before anyone leaves the house.

Who won Indiana’s 2025 softball state titles?

Four schools, four scores, one stadium. Three of the finals were shutouts. Cathedral’s was 5-4.

  • 1A, June 13: North Newton 2, Clay City 0. North Newton was 24-3-1. Clay City was 21-7. First title in any sport for North Newton.
  • 4A, resumed June 14: Crown Point 2, Center Grove 0 in nine innings. Crown Point was 31-4. Center Grove was 26-4. Second title, the first in 2017.
  • 2A, June 14: Tecumseh 2, Andrean 0. Tecumseh was 31-2. Andrean was 23-8. Sixth softball crown, first in 2A, and Andrean had one hit.
  • 3A, June 14: Indianapolis Cathedral 5, Hanover Central 4. Cathedral was 29-2. Hanover Central was 18-13. First softball title for Cathedral.

The 4A final started Friday night and resumed Saturday after a rain delay of nearly 17 hours, in the top of the second inning. The IHSAA still published one score for that game. A rec rainout can do the same: one diamond, one new start, one message.

How did Sydney Rainford strike out 17?

She pitched the whole 2-0 game, struck out the first five Clay City batters, and finished the seventh with her 17th strikeout.

Will Willems’s recap says Rainford was perfect through four innings, then gave up a leadoff single to Faith Mitchell in the fifth. She struck out nine of the first 12 batters, struck out the side in the sixth, and struck out the first two in the seventh before a two-out single. After a mound visit she struck out the last batter. Clay City finished with two baserunners. North Newton scored in the fifth on Rainford’s RBI single, after Paige Culbreth and Macy Busboom singled to open the inning, and added a run in the sixth when Macy Busboom singled home June Busboom. Culbreth and Macy Busboom each had two hits. Clay City pitcher Lizzy Sinders allowed seven hits, two earned runs, and five strikeouts.

The same recap puts the game inside a longer shutout run. North Newton outscored postseason opponents 31-0. Rainford pitched every inning of that run, with 108 strikeouts and 11 hits allowed, and the IHSAA says the Spartans were the first team since Indianapolis Scecina in 2007 to go through a postseason without allowing a run. She finished the season with 373 strikeouts, which the association says tied for fifth nationally, and the team had 19 shutouts, including the last nine games. Coach Katherine Messersmith was in her second season. The Spartans lost their opener to Wheeler, then lost two in a row in mid-May to McCutcheon and Washington Township, then won 11 straight. Rainford graduated as valedictorian of a class of 80 and was the first North Newton athlete to receive an IHSAA mental-attitude award. A Fort Wayne baseball rec night still needs the diamond on the schedule.

How did Crown Point win in nine innings?

Paige Liezert threw all nine innings, struck out 16, and Crown Point scored both runs in the top of the ninth. The final was 2-0.

Rich Torres’s IHSAA recap says the 40th annual finals were postponed overnight and resumed Saturday at Bittinger Stadium, in the top of the second. Liezert, 20-2, threw 158 pitches, allowed four hits and two walks, and closed Crown Point’s 11th straight win. Center Grove loaded the bases in the third. Liezert struck out the next batter, then retired 13 in a row. The Trojans loaded the bases again in the eighth, and a five-pitch strikeout ended it. They stranded seven runners. Riley Fuhr was perfect through five innings. Kara Biever pitched the last four. In the ninth, Lexi Smith walked, Ashlyn Kita singled, Nevaeh Rangel’s sacrifice fly scored the first run, and freshman Lulu Johnston singled in the second. A fly ball to right field ended the bottom of the ninth. It was Crown Point’s second softball title, after 2017, and the program’s second state-final appearance. Center Grove’s Sydney Herrmann won the mental-attitude award. The score took an extra inning and a second day. The diamond name stayed the same.

How did Cathedral hold a 5-4 lead?

Anna Moore’s two-run hit in the fourth tied the game and put Cathedral ahead, and Sidney Feczko struck out the final batter with the lead at 5-4.

Lewis Bagley’s recap says Cathedral trailed 2-1 when Moore, with two on, slapped a pitch into the left-center gap. The Irish then put up four runs in that stretch. Hanover Central had taken the lead in the third on Sienna Stilley’s two-run home run, her 17th of the season and the third-highest total in the state that year. Kelsey Beres singled in the fifth to score courtesy runner Ellis Land, who was running for Feczko, and the lead became 5-2. In the seventh, walks to Adeline McMahon and Kaden Poppe and a single by Rebecca Ferguson made it 5-4 before Feczko struck out Nora Edgerton. Feczko finished with 10 strikeouts and a 20-1 record. Coach Tony Matthews reached 250 career wins at the semistate the week before, against Evansville Memorial. Cathedral had reached the finals in 2001 and 2003. Hanover Central was in its first finals since a 2A title in 2004. Moore, a Purdue recruit playing at Bittinger, had a .517 career average as a leadoff hitter and 175 runs, which the IHSAA ranks fifth all-time in Indiana. She also won the 3A mental-attitude award.

How many girls play high school fastpitch softball?

331,162 in the NFHS 2025-26 count, at 15,712 schools. That is the fifth-largest girls sport in the summary.

Four Indiana finals are a small slice of 331,162 roster spots. Those spots land on diamonds that already have a 6:00 game. A Dallas baseball complex, a Houston baseball complex, and a Chicago baseball park feel that on a Saturday when two age groups share a backstop. The national count assigns none of those diamonds. The diamond schedule does. Columbus baseball and Cleveland baseball families already know what a posted score looks like. They should get a posted field that looks finished.

17 strikeouts still happened on one diamond. A rec Saturday can publish which diamond.

What should a rec director copy from Bittinger Stadium?

The class, the opponent, the site, and the inning the game resumes. A rec game can publish age group, opponent, diamond, and start before anyone drives.

Crown Point’s final moved from Friday night to Saturday afternoon and picked up in the second inning. The association still had one score, one stadium, and one pitcher line when it ended. A rec rain delay needs the same three things in the league dashboard: the diamond, the new clock, and whether the game continues or starts over. The Saturday arrival is when families use last week’s pin if Friday’s message never named the field. Cincinnati baseball and Atlanta baseball leagues can post that line the way the IHSAA posted 2-0.

Which cities should treat four finals as a diamond problem?

Any city whose Saturday already stacks more than one game on one complex.

West Lafayette hosted all four classes. Indianapolis had Cathedral in the 3A final. Crown Point and Center Grove brought northwest and south-suburban programs to the same park. A rec league in Indianapolis can have the same overlap: two age groups, one parking lot, two first pitches. The Indiana football finals showed six kickoffs in one stadium. Softball’s version is four games and a rain delay. Phoenix baseball parks have the same math on a lights night.

What should a director check before the next softball Saturday?

Each game needs its own diamond and start. Four finals in one stadium were still four games.

  • Every age group has a diamond number, plus the name of the complex.
  • A 2-0 game and a 5-4 game are separate time slots.
  • A rain delay says which inning resumes, and on which diamond.
  • The gate matches the diamond, so the family is using this week’s pin.
  • Coaches and parents see the same assignment.
  • If you cite demand, cite the source: IHSAA for the four scores, NFHS for the 331,162.

North Newton’s title was 17 strikeouts and a 2-0 final. The state wrote both down. A rec league can write the diamond down. Brands that want to be at that field can sponsor a game. Directors can request a demo. Coaches Pick stays free for league owners, including the home page families already use to find a league.
